Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor Courses
The main focus of Hawaii Fitness Academy LLC is to increase fitness and solid information in our community. In order to do this as effectively as possible, we feel a responsibility to share our experience and knowledge with those interested in becoming fitness professionals. There are many very reputable nationally recognized organizations that provide study materials and have established testing programs to certify individuals in Personal Training and Group Fitness Instruction. A few offer weekend workshops to give students the opportunity to have an instructor clarify this information. Unfortunately, these workshops and seminars are rarely held on the Big Island. And realistically, a weekend is far too little time to learn an entire field of study. Personal Training incorporates a fair amount anatomy, physiology, physics, biomechanics, pharmacology, psychology, and even a little business administration. And even good students, who understand all of their study materials well, will still be lacking in experience. If you have ever been job hunting, you know how much employers value experience. And so do people looking to hire a Personal Trainer.
Hawaii Fitness Academy LLC offers classes to fill this void in our community. The first and foundation course prepares students to take their certification exam and gain practical experience to become a Personal Trainer. There are two ways to enroll in the Personal Trainer program.
Students can enroll in a private, one-on-one instructional program. In this program the student has sole access to their teacher during all of their classes and practical experience time. There is really no better way to learn any subject. Naturally, this type of arrangement is more expensive per hour. But the amount of time necessary to cover the material is greatly reduced. Students in the private study program have uninterrupted interaction with the instructor. There is no sitting idly while other students ask questions about material you already understand. Or waiting for other students’ questions to be answered before you can ask questions of your own. Or waiting for any of the instructor’s time and attention in the practical experience sessions.
Another advantage of the private instruction program is that the student has more flexibility to arrange the schedule of their class time. In the private instruction program students can schedule up to 30 hours of class time in each 4 week period. Students in this program have first access to the schedule calendar of available class time for each month (4 weeks = one month). Students can schedule more time when they have less to do and less time when they are busier (with work or family, etc.). Students in this program may also attend the evening and weekend classes if these classes are in session that month (This time does not come out of the student’s 30 hours!). Students must schedule all 30 hours at the beginning of each 4 week period. But changes can be made during the month if there is time available on the calendar to do so. (Semi-private programs can also be arranged for 2 or 3 students to form a class.)
- Students can enroll in an evening or weekend class. There is a required minimum of 4 students to start one of these classes (2 or 3 students can make arrangements for semi-private classes). The evening class is scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The weekend class is scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Both classes are scheduled to meet for 8 hours each week during a 4 week period. This gives students the opportunity to spend 32 hours in a directed learning environment each month (4 weeks = one month). There is no make-up time available for these classes. Students are expected to attend class when it is scheduled, but there are no other penalties for missing classes. (It is your time and your tuition. It is up to the student to make it to classes or not.) If enrollment drops below the 4 student minimum, the remaining students have the option of forming a semi-private class, upgrading individually to private student status until more students enroll, or waiting for more students to enroll. The program is taught in manner that keeps the longest enrolled students on track to finish the material in a total of 12 weeks (3 months).
There are a few other advantages of the Personal Trainer programs. One is that students will have an opportunity to learn about topics that are at the cutting-edge of exercise science. Students, who have regularly attended classes for 12 weeks, will be as much as two years ahead of the average newly certified Personal Trainer. And all students that have passed a certification exam receive 25% off of the regular rates for continuing education courses (courses necessary to maintain a Personal Trainer certification, see Continuing Education Courses).
Students can enroll for as many 4 week sessions as they wish, for as long as they wish. After 12 weeks of class time (12 weeks/3 paid 4 week sessions) in either program, a student can continue with either program if they wish at the original tuition level. Or they can attempt to take a certification exam after 12 weeks of class time (8 weeks/2 paid 4 week sessions for private program students). If a student is unsuccessful at completing a certification exam after 12 weeks of class time, they can choose to continue to enroll in 4 week sessions of the private, evening or weekend class at 70% of the original tuition rate for these classes (the 4 student minimum still applies to the evening and weekend classes). After 8 more weeks (2 paid 4 week sessions), students who did not successfully complete a certification exam on the first attempt, can retake a certification exam. If they are again unsuccessful, they can continue in the program of their choice at 50% of the original tuition rate for as long as they wish. (Students, who successfully complete a certification exam, may also continue class sessions at 50% of the original tuition rate for as long as they wish. Private program time students at the 50% rate will have access to the private program calendar after students newly enrolled or still attempting to successfully complete a certification exam.)
(As previously mentioned, semi-private programs for 2 or 3 students can be arranged if the students involved agree to participate in such a program.)
(The course materials for the private program are up to the private student. They may choose any nationally accredited Personal Trainer certifying body available, such as ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, etc. It is recommended that these students choose a program that is NCCA accredited.)
(The course materials for the evening or weekend classes will be chosen by the instructor. Students are encouraged to order their materials as soon as they have decided to enroll in the class. Don’t wait until the 4 student minimum is met. A class will begin within three weeks of having 4 students with paid tuition.)
(Each student is responsible for purchasing their own course materials and paying for their own certification exam or exams.)
(There are no refunds once a 4 week session begins. Tuition must be paid in full to participate in a session. All 4 students meeting the 4 student minimum must have paid tuition for an evening or weekend class session to begin.)
Continuing Education Courses (CECs)
Hawaii Fitness Academy also provides certified Personal Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors with continuing education courses to assist them in meeting the requirements of their certifying organization to maintain their certifications. We call our CEC program the Fit Pro Café. The options available are presented in a “menu” format similar to making choices at a restaurant.
